Sample Interviewing Guide

INTERVIEWING EMPLOYEES

A successful interview will reveal how the candidate has benefited its’ employer(s) in the past and how you can leverage those traits to meet or even exceed your available position objectives.

Following are some useful tips for interviewing employees, as well as a Sample Interviewing Guide to ensure that you hire the right person.

DISCRIMINATORY INTERVIEWING

Anti-discrimination laws protect everyone from unfair discrimination. This means you choose the best people from the widest pool of potential employees and you cannot discriminate against an applicant because of:

  • Age
  • Sex/potential pregnancy
  • Marital status
  • Ethnic origin
  • Religious preference
  • Sexual preference
  • Disability
  • Politics

STRUCTURING THE INTERVIEW

An interview is structured when it has an interview plan, based on job requirements. The structured interview is best understood as being an outline of specific questions, which are designed to help the interviewee provide evidence for his or her skills and competencies in relation to the job in question.

An example of how to structure your interview may include the following:

  1. Establish rapport with the applicant
  2. Explain the interview process:
    - Brief review of current/past positions
    - Questions to get specific examples and information about those jobs/experiences
    - Information about salary/benefits
  3. Post interview, score each competency to help determine the most suitable applicants

DEVELOPING YOUR COMPETENCY BASED QUESTIONS

As every role is different, the competencies you may require will vary at all levels of seniority. Once you confirm the competencies for the position you are recruiting for, your questions should be aimed at getting the candidate to describe a specific incident. This incident should demonstrate the candidate’s use of specific behaviour and what happened as a result. To achieve this, your questions will often begin with:

“Tell me about a time when…”

“Describe a situation in which…”

“Give me an example when…”

If you prefer, you can always contact your local Kelly Services office to help you develop your job description and associated interview questions.

CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW

By way of example, we have based the Sample Interviewing Guide  to reflect our Personal Assistant sample position description. This will demonstrate the link between our position description and the questions asked to confirm which applicant(s) have the skills and competencies to perform the job.

>>  To verify your candidate(s) following the interview, it is strongly recommended to conduct Reference Checks.  See our Tips for Reference Checking and suggested Reference Check Questions.
